Every year, on December 23rd, National Farmers’ Day popularly known as Kisan Diwas is celebrated in India. It is important as it pays tribute to the fifth prime minister of India Chaudhary Charan Singh whose vision and strategies reformed farming in post-independent India. His focus on uplifting the farmer and their well-being molded the further course of Indian agriculture. He has an enduring legacy for Indian agriculture.

Chaudhary Charan Singh was born in 1902 in Uttar Pradesh and was extremely active in promoting farmer rights. He grew up in a family of farmers and realized the problems faced by rural people and therefore entered politics in order to help them. During his rule in 1979-1980 as the Prime Minister of India, Charan Singh introduced measures directed at poverty alleviation, land distribution and better farming techniques.
